Interested in the sport of ice hockey, but are a bit hesitant to step on the ice? The Nassau County Hockey League accepts players of all levels, from the beginner to the more advanced. Our staff of coaches and volunteers all agree on one thing—the common goal of making the sport of ice hockey an enjoyable experience for all involved, from player to parent.
The 2018-2019 NCHL Season is open to players born between 2004 and 2013. Based upon age, players are assigned to one of five age groups:
6U (ages 5-6, birth years 2012-2013)
8U (ages 7-8, birth years 2010-2011)
10U (ages 9-10, birth years 2008-2009)
12U (ages 11-2, birth years 2006-2007)
14U (ages 13-14, birth years 2004-2005)
The Mini-Mite (6U) and Mite (8U) Programs consist of Skill Development Sessions and cross-ice games. Players at the Mini-Mite and Mite Levels are taught the basic fundamentals of the sport, from basic skating to passing and shooting. The Mini-Mite and Mite Programs are generally held Saturday evenings at our outdoor facility, Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn (weather pending, beginning towards the end of November), and Sunday mornings at Cantiague Park in Hicksville (beginning the first Sunday in October).
The 10U, 12U and 14U levels are played at Cantiague Park in Hicksville, Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn, Grant Park in Hewlett, and the Northwell Health Center at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow. The players at these levels are evaluated at two sessions before the season begins, where their current skill level is assessed by our staff and coaches. From there, the players are drafted onto teams, given a jersey and will begin a series of team practices and skill development sessions. The Season then progresses into games from the end of November through the end of the regular season at the close of February, culminating in the NCHL Tournament where all teams will qualify for the playoffs and a shot at the Division Championship.
In addition to all the attached information regarding players, the Nassau County Hockey League is always in need of volunteers and coaches. In order to participate as a coach or volunteer, potential candidates must attend and attain their USA Hockey Level I Coaching Certification. This day-long event features experienced speakers and coaches, in addition to on-ice participation, geared toward those who wish to become an active part of the grassroots development of youth hockey. It is not necessary that you have skating ability to become certified as a USA Hockey Coach, simply the desire to be a part of the betterment of youth hockey in a positive environment that fosters the concepts of teamwork, skill development and sportsmanship. Locally, there will a USA Hockey Level I Coaching Certification Course. Visit USAHockey.com for more information.
